2012 WYART Winter/Spring Classes We would like to thank you all for your patience and support as we have taken the time to plan the future of WYART. We believe it will be more than worth the wait with a new Theatre Eductation Director, a few new instructors (alongside a long-time favorite), and an array of classes to suit all ages, interests and skill level. We want the educational experience of your children at WYART to be the absolute best it can be, and we welcome your comments, suggestions and observations as we go forward. Weathervane Playhouse CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Musical Theatre Do you love to sing and dance? Come and explore the golden age of musical theatre in a fun and exciting twelve-week class. Students will learn healthy vocal technique and also work on acting through dance, movement dynamics, and fundamental dance technique. Session 1: Monday – Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, March 12, 19 Wednesday – Feb. 8, 15, 22, 29, March 14, 21 grades 4-7 4 - 4:55 p.m. grades 8-12 5 - 5:55 p.m. Parents may observe last week of session 1. Session 2: Monday – April 2, 9,16, 23, 30, May 7 Wednesday – April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9 grades 4-7 4 - 4:55 p.m. grades 8-12 5 - 5:55 p.m. Monday: Students will improve their voices and become stronger and more expressive singers, while learning solo and group numbers from the groundbreaking musicalsOklahoma and West Side Story. Voice Instructor: Denise Duellman-LaCara Wednesday: Students will apply their new skills to choreography from the great dance musicals Oklahoma and West Side Story. Add the third element of “triple threat” to your performance with DANCE! From beginner to the more experienced dancer, all levels can benefit from this class. Dance Instructor: Erica Twining Please note: This class meets two days a week for a total of two hours each week. Tuition for 12 weeks (Session 1 and 2) is $240, payable in two installments. Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 15. Students should dress in comfortable dance clothes and shoes. NO BLUE JEANS. *Performance showcase for family and friends May 11 and 12. The Actor’s Process Taught by Equity actress and Denison University adjunct professor Wendy Barrie Wilson, this is a class for the high school student who is serious about acting and a theatre career. It is not enough to just memorize lines and go where a director tells you. An actor’s job is to determine who a character is, what he wants, and what is preventing him from getting it. Students will explore how an actor makes “choices” that reveal a character, in order to develop a more interesting and fully realized performance. Grades 9-12 Session 1: Tuesday – Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, March 13, 20 Parents observe last week of session 1. Session 2: Tuesday – April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8 4:30-6 p.m. Tuition for 12 weeks (Session 1 and 2) is $200, payable in two installments. Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 10 *Performance showcase for family and friends May 11 and 12. Let’s Play! Creative Drama and Movement This is an introductory class for young, beginning drama students. We will explore the world of creative drama through the areas of pantomime, improvisation and guided play. Students will play games and learn a variety of fun vocal and movement exercises in order to bring a character to life. Using the best-selling books John Klassen’s I Want my Hat Backand Oliver Jeffers’s Stuck, students will also work as a class to bring literature to life. Session two will culminate in a performance showcasing our best work. Creative Drama Instructor: Rachel Brumfield Grades K-3 Session 1: Thursday – Feb. 9, 16, 23, March 1, 15, 22 Parents may observe last week of session 1. Session 2: Thursday – April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3, 10 5-6 p.m. Tuition for each session is $100. Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 12 *Performance showcase for family and friends May 11 and 12. Beginning Guitar For beginners of all ages, this is a basic course designed to teach the fundamentals of guitar performance while also giving a basic study in beginning music theory. The goal is to provide a solid musical education with emphasis on guitar technique and performance. Students should have an acoustic guitar, but all learning materials will be provided. Guitar Instructor: Mary Borgia Session 1: Thursday – Feb. 9, 16, 23, March 1, 15, 22 4:30-5:25 p.m. Grades 4-7 5:30-6:25 p.m. Grades 8-Adult Parents may observe last week of session 1. Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 12 *Performance showcase for family and friends May 11 and 12. Acting Improvisation One of the most useful skills an actor can practice is the art of improv. It frees the imagination and helps actors discover new ideas within themselves and others. Actors who study improvisation learn to trust themselves and others on stage. It makes them fearless performers who develop self-confidence and a unique way of looking at the world. Students will learn the basics of improvisation including the secret “rules” that all great improvisers know.
